Title : Explosives in the Sirius program< Type : Antarctic EAM NSF Org: OD / OPP Date : June 04, 1990 File : opp93005 DIVISION OF POLAR PROGRAMS OFFICE OF SAFETY, ENVIRONMENT, AND HEALTH 202/357-7766 MEMORANDUM Date: June 4, 1990 From: Environmental Office, DPP Subject: P. Webb / DPP 89-19910 / Request to employ explosives in the Sirius program To: Program Manager, Polar Earth Sciences, DPP Field Projects Manager, DPP Jacket DPP 89-19910 I have read Dr. Peter Webb's letter of May 8, 1990, to Dr. Herman Zimmerman concerning the essentiality of using explosives (and other machinery) to collect fossil material. Also, I have read D. Zimmerman's memorandum of May 23, 1990, analyzing the needs identified in Dr. Webb's letter. I agree with their overall assessment that the judicious use of explosives (and ancillary equipment) to collect these valuable geologic materials will pose no significant impact to the environment of the area where the collections will take place.
