Dr. Susan Pell is a botanist and science educator, and holds a Ph.D. in plant biology from Louisiana State University. Her research expertise is plant molecular systematics, with a focus on the cashew family, Anacardiaceae. Dr. Pell has spent her career at botanical gardens and institutes of higher education in New York City, where she has taught courses, given public lectures, and mentored over 20 high school students in laboratory-based research and professional development. Susan has been involved in women in science issues since she served as the AWIS Baton Rouge chapter Mentoring Coordinator and President as a graduate student. These experiences have strengthened her appreciation for the transformative potential of mentoring first generation college students and underrepresented young people. Dr. Pell is interested in improving science communication, broadening participation in STEM, and showing people the awesomeness of plants.
