Rocio Benabentos

Rocio Benabentos is a molecular biologist with a background in genetics, evolution, and developmental biology. She is joining NSF as a AAAS Science & Technology Fellow, and will be working as part of the ADVANCE program in the Division of Human Resource Development (HRD) in the Directorate for Education & Human Resources (EHR).
As a graduate student at Baylor College of Medicine, Rocio investigated the genetic mechanism of kin discrimination in the social amoeba Dictyostelium discoideum. After receiving her Ph.D., she joined the National Institutes of Health as a postdoctoral fellow, where she studied early developmental mechanisms in echinoderms and their evolution.
Rocio is interested in addressing science education concerns at the undergraduate, graduate, and post-graduate levels. She is particularly interested in broadening participation in STEM and promoting a diverse scientific workforce. In her spare time, she enjoys reading, ice-skating, and baking.
