Karen Alroy

Karen is joining NSF as a AAAS Science and Technology Policy Fellow in the Division of Environmental Biology working specifically with the Dimensions of Biodiversity Program. Karen is trained in the fields of Veterinary Medicine and Public Health. She has strong interests in the connections between human, animal, and environmental health. Karen has worked in both laboratory and field research as well as practiced clinical veterinary medicine. In 2010 Karen was awarded a Fogarty Scholar award, an NIH supported training grant for global health research, and she conducted infectious disease investigations in Lima, Peru. Some of her prior research has included work on superantigens and the genetic determinants of autoimmune disease, the phylogenetics of marine organisms, and the prevalence of antibiotic resistant bacteria in wastewater and coastal wildlife. Karen enjoys hiking in the mountains, exploring the inter-tidal zone, and cooking interesting meals for her friends and family.
