Broadening Participation

The NSF Strategic Plan for 2006-2011 states four outcome goals. One of those goals is the development of "a world-class, broadly inclusive science and engineering workforce." Broadening participation in science and engineering is a priority for all NSF grant programs. In addition, NSF has several programs specifically to promote the participation of underrepresented groups in science and engineering fields. The goal of broadening the participation of underrepresented groups in the science and engineering has long been a priority at NSF and is manifested in the 2006-2011 NSF Strategic Plan. Last year, the Foundation's Director appointed a Senior Advisor to coordinate "efforts in broadening participation from underrepresented groups and diverse institutions across all geographic regions in all NSF activities."

The Office of Diversity and Inclusion works closely with NSF'S Broadening Participation Group through outreach to underrepresented groups such as Minority Serving Institutions, Historically Black Colleges and Universities, and Hispanic Serving Institutions. (NSF Broadening Participation)
