In June 2006, Larry Prichard retired as the Superintendent of Carter County Schools in Kentucky, a position he had held for nine years. Prior to that Mr. Prichard was the Superintendent of Schools in Randolph County, West Virginia and the Assistant Superintendent of Schools in Lincoln County, West Virginia. He has worked in the field of education for 34 years, all of them in rural Appalachia. During this time, he has held positions throughout the education system, including teacher, basketball coach, elementary school principal, superintendent, and president of a local education association. He holds a master's degree in school administration from Marshall University.

Mr. Prichard has been tireless in his efforts to improve the educational experiences of the students in his school district to prepare them for the rapidly changing world. In particular, he has worked with local businesses and universities to fulfill their needs for a technically educated workforce and adequately prepared science and math students. His long history in administration has allowed him to significantly redesign local infrastructure, curricula, and instruction from pre-kindergarten to high school.

Carter County Schools, under Mr. Prichard's leadership, has been one of the school districts to participate in the Appalachian Math and Science Partnership program with the University of Kentucky, which is funded by the National Science Foundation in order to improve the math and science skills of students in Appalachia.
