Vannevar Bush award nominations re-opened

Each year, the National Science Board (NSB) honors an individual with its prestigious Vannevar Bush award, named after the gifted visionary and dynamic public servant who was behind the creation of the National Science Foundation (NSF). This "career capstone" award honors life-long leaders who have made exceptional contributions toward the welfare of humankind and the nation through public service activities in science, technology and public policy. Past recipients include former Lockheed Martin CEO Norman Augustine, former science advisor and NSF director Neal Lane and former Carnegie Institution president Maxine Singer.

The Board is re-opening its nominations call for individuals who are U.S. citizens and have demonstrated outstanding leadership and accomplishment in at least two of the following selection criteria:

  • Distinguished public service in science and technology;
  • Exploration, charting and settlement of new frontiers in science, technology, education and public service;
  • Demonstrated leadership and creativity that inspired others to distinguished careers in science and technology;
  • Contributions to the welfare of the nation and humankind through activities in science and technology;
  • Demonstrated leadership and creativity that has helped mold the history of advancements in the nation's science, technology and education.

Nominations must be received by Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2015. Instructions are available on the Vannevar Bush Award website.

About the National Science Board

NSB is the policymaking body for NSF. NSB also advises the president and Congress on science and engineering policy issues. NSB's 24 members are drawn primarily from universities and industry and represent a variety of science and engineering disciplines. Selected for their eminence in research, education or public service and records of distinguished service, board members serve six-year terms. NSF's director is NSB's ex officio 25th member.
