In an effort to better promote discovery science and engineering to a wider range of audiences, the National Science Foundation (NSF) has launched three new multimedia communications vehicles: a video interview series with NSF-funded scientists and program officers; a conversational style feature article; and a video weekend wrap-up of NSF-funded science news.

"Communicating the importance of public investment in fundamental research is something we do every day," said Dana Topousis, acting head of NSF's Office of Legislative and Public Affairs. "Introducing public audiences to diverse NSF-funded researchers from all fields of science and engineering and relating the relevance and value of the work they do is a key component of our efforts."

Scientists and Engineers on Sofas...and other furnishings

This new video series is designed to be less of an interview and more of a conversation. The aim is to shed light on research, while also showing a bit more of the scientist, engineer or educator and how they are motivated to do what they do. The series includes experts who are an important part of NSF and the research the agency funds. See the latest video, released today!

After the Lecture

Since 1950, NSF has funded 214 Nobel Prize recipients before they ever received such commendation, along with countless other scientists and engineers who have received honors for their work. Not surprisingly, when the agency hosts public lectures, many of these trail-blazing researchers take to the dais, shedding light on some aspect of their research or field of science. But after the lecture is when we have the opportunity to ask them about what drives their scientific pursuits, and what advice they would offer to young scientists in the making. This conversational style feature series is designed to pick up where Scientists on Sofas leaves off, offering a personal perspective and interesting anecdotes from some of the most respected names in science.

NSF's Science360 News wrap-up

Anyone who has the Science360 iPad app or follows the NSF news service on Facebook or Twitter knows how Science360 editors Jordan D'Eri and Charlie Heck dispatch engaging science news and photos daily. A new ICYMI ("in case you missed it") wrap-up offers some of the week's most compelling research news, presented in a lively and conversational fashion.

"These new products add to our existing multimedia and social media efforts," Topousis said. "They are valuable in expanding our reach, especially to young people."

The U.S. National Science Foundation propels the nation forward by advancing fundamental research in all fields of science and engineering. NSF supports research and people by providing facilities, instruments and funding to support their ingenuity and sustain the U.S. as a global leader in research and innovation. With a fiscal year 2023 budget of $9.5 billion, NSF funds reach all 50 states through grants to nearly 2,000 colleges, universities and institutions. Each year, NSF receives more than 40,000 competitive proposals and makes about 11,000 new awards. Those awards include support for cooperative research with industry, Arctic and Antarctic research and operations, and U.S. participation in international scientific efforts.
