Kepler Discovers Planetary System Orbiting Two Suns

artist's rendition of the Kepler-47 system Astronomers at the International Astronomical Union meeting announced the discovery of the first transiting circumbinary multi-planet system: Two planets orbiting around a pair of stars. The discovery shows that planetary systems can form and survive even in the chaotic environment around a binary star. And such planets can exist in the habitable zone of their stars. Full Story

The National Science Foundation (NSF) is an independent federal agency that supports fundamental research and education across all fields of science and engineering. In fiscal year (FY) 2016, its budget is $7.5 billion. NSF funds reach all 50 states through grants to nearly 2,000 colleges, universities and other institutions.
