 News From the Field Accelerating Robotic Innovation

Robots are a study in contrasts. They can perform superhuman feats and get tripped up by toddler-level tasks. They're digitally programmable, but intricacies of their physical behavior go far beyond the reach of computer simulations. A team of researchers from Rice University, Halmstad University and Texas A&M University hopes to change that and speed robotic innovation with a new generation of design software that can accurately predict the physical behavior of robots prior to prototyping.

The National Science Foundation (NSF) is an independent federal agency that supports fundamental research and education across all fields of science and engineering. In fiscal year (FY) 2012, its budget was $7.0 billion. NSF funds reach all 50 states through grants to nearly 2,000 colleges, universities and other institutions.
