Rising Carbon Dioxide Levels at End of Last Ice Age Not Tied to Pacific Ocean, As Had Been Suspected

After the last ice age peaked about 18,000 years ago, levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide CO2 rose about 30 percent. Scientists believe that the additional CO2--a heat-trapping greenhouse gas--played a key role in warming the planet and melting the continental ice sheets. They have long hypothesized that the source of the gas was the deep ocean. Full Story

The National Science Foundation (NSF) is an independent federal agency that supports fundamental research and education across all fields of science and engineering. In fiscal year (FY) 2012, its budget was $7.0 billion. NSF funds reach all 50 states through grants to nearly 2,000 colleges, universities and other institutions.
