USC Lab Releases Smartphone App That Measures Particulate Air Pollution

University of Southern California computer scientists have found a way to combine smartphone resources with a novel application that allows the phones' users to help monitor air quality. Phone sensors guide users to take a picture of sunlit sky from a precise angle; a picture is then transmitted to a central computer that, using established models, can analyze the image to estimate the concentration of "haze aerosols."
