 News From the Field University of Nevada, Reno Tests Cutting-edge Technology for Underwater Mapping at Tahoe Basin

A borrowed boat, a small mountain lake and the inaugural run of a half-a-million-dollar, state-of-the-art multi-beam sonar system made history this month with the successful high-definition mapping of the bottom of Fallen Leaf Lake, a tributary lake just upstream from Lake Tahoe.

The National Science Foundation (NSF) is an independent federal agency that supports fundamental research and education across all fields of science and engineering. In fiscal year (FY) 2012, its budget was $7.0 billion. NSF funds reach all 50 states through grants to nearly 2,000 colleges, universities and other institutions.
