Deal saves 65 million taxpayer dollars in lease payments

Today, the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) announced a new lease agreement for the National Science Foundation's (NSF) national headquarters in Virginia. The deal saves taxpayers $65 million over the 15-year term of the lease, while providing space that NSF needs to serve the American people in supporting fundamental research and education across all fields of science and engineering.

Under the new lease agreement, NSF will occupy 660,848 square feet of space at the Hoffman Town Center complex in Alexandria, Va., in 2017 at a rental rate that is more than 30 percent below the market rate. The deal also provides the government with $35 million, which can be applied to further rent savings, reduce costs of relocation, and reduce overall operational costs.

The lease award is the result of an open and competitive procurement. The selected offer met all the minimum requirements of the December 2012 Request for Lease Proposals and was the lowest priced offer providing the best value to the taxpayers.

Hoffman Block 8, LLC, owned by Hoffman Development Inc., will offer a more efficient use of space than NSF's current locations and use less energy and water than typical office buildings. NSF headquarters operations will remain at their current leased spaces at 4121 and 4201 Wilson Blvd. in Arlington, Va., while Hoffman Development Inc. completes construction on the new facility.
