International Year of Light comes to Washington D.C. Sept. 12
Two events to celebrate achievements in science and engineering of light and light-based technologies, and raise awareness of contributions to humanity

The daytime event will feature nearly two dozen interactive exhibits that allow hands-on learning about light, including demonstrations about kaleidoscopes from the NSF-funded Center for Integrated Access Networks and polarization from grantees at the University of Texas, Austin. Shown here is an interactive light installation that uses sensors to respond to sound and motion, known as the radiance dome. A smaller version of the dome, known as the radiance orb, will be on display at the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian on Saturday with the other exhibits, and at the Torpedo Factory Art Center the following Sunday, Sept. 13.
