Mapping snake venom reveals evolutionary pattern (Image 4)

An adult eastern diamondback rattlesnake from north Florida.

Results of a large-scale survey of venom variation in the eastern diamondback rattlesnake (Crotalus adamanteus) and the eastern coral snake (Micrurus fulvius) challenge common assumptions in venom evolution research, provide crucial information for rattlesnake conservation and will help coral snake antivenom development.

The research was conducted by Darin Rokyta of Florida State University and was supported by the National Science Foundation (grant DEB 11-45987).
