Engines of curiosity: Award-winning museums look to the future

The Museum of Science in Boston and New York City's American Museum of Natural History are both iconic landmarks on their city's skylines. They're impressive buildings, chock-full of amazing stuff: Van de Graaff generators and T-Rex skeletons, planetarium skies and a big blue whale.

Even more impressive, however, may be the way these museums extend their reach beyond those iconic buildings, into classrooms, curriculum and the lives of students.

Both museums were honored with a 2015 Public Service Award from the National Science Board. The award recognizes individuals and groups that have made substantial contributions to increasing public understanding of science and engineering in the U.S.
