Red blood cells flowing through blood vessel in heart

This 3D rendering of red blood cells flowing through a blood vessel in the heart to deliver oxygen to underlying muscle cells (myocytes) was created by researchers at the Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center (PSC) for PSC's Computational Modules in Science Teaching (CMIST) program.

CMIST creates innovative science tutorials using high-quality, biologically realistic 3D animations (which it brings into secondary school classrooms) focusing on integrative, computational biology, physiology and biophysics. Animations are produced with cutting-edge simulation and visualization software and subject material is chosen to highlight critical concepts that are difficult to convey with static textbook images and words; for example, cellular transport of molecules by diffusion and osmosis or the structure and function of enzymes in cells. Specific modules are introduced in two-hour workshops throughout the school year. (Date of Image: 2008)
