Expanding Minds: Creating Engaging Science Outside of the Classroom
NSF uses a variety of informal education methods to make science, mathematics and engineering everyday practices. Among other projects, the foundation funds television and radio programs, hands-on exhibits at museums, zoos and botanical gardens, and science-by-mail, a pen pal arrangement between students and professional scientists and engineers.

Promoting Diversity in the SMET Workforce
The Alliance for Minority Participation (AMP) program encourages underrepresented minorities to study and pursue careers in science, mathematics, engineering and technology (SMET).

The White House and NSF honored 10 individuals and 6 institutions for their outstanding mentoring of students in science, mathematics and engineering.

National Science and Technology Week 1997: Webs, Wires and Waves--April 20-26

NSTW focuses on communication and communication technologies in the annual celebration of hands-on exploration of science and engineering.

U.S. Students Earn Average Scores in Global Study

U.S. eighth-graders finished in the middle of the pack in an international test of science and mathematics skills. Their scores were on a par with German and British students.
