Scientists Grow Cells in 3-D Using Magnetic Fields

Using magnetic fields and cells containing magnetic nanoparticles, researchers have demonstrated that levitated cells can grow into three-dimensional tissue that may resemble real human tissue much more closely than cells grown with traditional methods on the bottom of a petri dish. Using nanoparticles of iron-oxide and coin-sized magnets, researchers in Houston's Texas Medical Center have found a way to grow 3-D cell cultures using magnetic levitation.
