Senate Appropriations Committee Recommends a 3.4 Percent Increase for NSF

Today, the U.S. Senate Committee on Appropriations passed the Fiscal Year (FY) 2013 Commerce, Justice, Science, and Related Agencies Appropriations Bill (CJS) and provided $7.273 billion for the National Science Foundation (NSF). The appropriation is $100 million below the President's request of $7.373 billion, but is $240 million, or 3.4 percent, above the FY 2012 appropriated level.
Research and Related Activities:
The bill would take the entire $100 million reduction out of the Research and Related Activities (R&RA) account, providing it with $5.883 billion. The appropriated level is $194 million, or 3.4 percent, above the FY 2012 level. The Committee provided the Foundation with specific direction to protect "core programs" and to find the savings from those areas identified in the "OneNSF Framework Priorities."
Education and Human Resources:
The Education and Human Resources (EHR) account is funded at the requested level of $875.6 million, an increase of $46.6 million, or 5.6 percent, over the FY 2012 appropriation level.
Major Research Equipment and Facilities Construction:
The Major Research Equipment and Facilities Construction (MREFC) account is funded at $196.17 million, equal to the requested level.
Agency Operations and Award Management:
The Agency Operations and Award Management (AOAM) account is funded at $299.4 million, equal to the requested level.
National Science Board:
The National Science Board (NSB) is funded at the requested level of $4.44 million.
Office of the Inspector General:
The Office of Inspector General (OIG) is funded at the requested level of $14.20 million.
