This 2014 video sampler describes the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST), a public-private partnership involving the National Science Foundation and Department of Energy.
LSST is the top-ranked, large-scale ground-based project for the next decade as recommended by the National Research Council's Astronomy and Astrophysics Decadal Survey (Astro2010). LSST will digitally scan the sky for 10 years, producing a petabyte-scale, non-proprietary, public database designed to address the most pressing questions in astronomy and physics, while driving advances in big-data science and computing.
By charting objects that change or move, and tracing billions of remote galaxies, LSST will characterize dark matter and dark energy, provide insight into cosmic explosions, and create detailed maps of our galaxy and solar system including potentially hazardous asteroids. LSST will actively engage the public in discovery through citizen science projects and transformative STEM education.
